Release OTTAWA, ON, April 3, 2008 OCRI, Ottawa's economic development agency honoured Ottawa's best and brightest companies, executives and students for their innovative work and contributions to the city's knowledge-based sector at the 13th annual OCRI Awards gala and dinner at The Westin Ottawa this evening. The awards celebrate excellence in the areas of research, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, partnership development and student accomplishments. Nominations for the nine categories were solicited from Ottawa's business and education community last December. Over 50 nominations were reviewed by the Society of Collaborative Opportunities and Advancement of Professionals (SCOAP). "Tonight's recipients represent the top executives, business leaders, thinkers and strategists in the city," said Jeffrey Dale, President and CEO, OCRI. "Every year the quality and caliber of the nominations increase. The impressive accomplishments of this evening's winners show that Ottawa truly is a city that encourages, engages and produces world-class talent, innovative products and dynamic companies." Two time nominee and first time winner this year in the category of Service of the Year, Scott Simpson, President of bitHeads Inc. adds "Being nominated is great fun but the secret is that the evening really isn't about winning awards-the night is a true celebration of excellence in Ottawa and a great opportunity to find out what incredible things other people are doing. It is always exciting and it's a good indicator that tech is alive and growing in Ottawa year after year. "Over the course of its 30-year history, Mitel's founders, investors and employees have contributed to establishing Ottawa as an innovative, entrepreneurial and vibrant technology hub that has resulted in expansive ties throughout the technology community here and abroad," said Steve Spooner, Chief Financial Officer, Mitel. "Honouring Mitel's acquisition of U.S.-based Inter-Tel as Best Financial Deal of the Year recognizes that to be successful in today's global economy, Ottawa-based businesses must be prepared to lead industry change."
