The Entrepreneurship Online
sub-project brought a wide range of online and downloadable
resources, previously only available through a face-to-face
visit to the centre. This suite of online services helps
entrepreneurs at any stage of small business development
– thinking, starting of growing.
An additional sub-project, also produced by the Entrepreneurship
Centre as part of SmartCapital, is the Ottawa Capital
Network, a place for entrepreneurs to get up to speed
on financing, how to get it and venture capital market
statistics.

digitalOttawa is all about
connecting Ottawa's creative content development community
to business opportunities, potential markets, ideas
and each other.
The grass-roots based initiative offers a variety of
community services:
- a member-based web portal including member profiles
and directory,
- industry news, events calendar, and job opportunities;
- a web site to promote members of the industry;
- regular social networking events; and
- connection to events and trade missions .

Ottawa |
Altogether Ottawa, launched
in 2002, provides the community with access to sophisticated
online collaboration tools that can be used to:
- distribute documents;
- engage in discussions;
- share images;
- post notes;
- exchange files;
- chat live in real-time;
- schedule and organize;
- send broadcast emails to members;
- conduct opinion polls; and
- create shared lists.
This service lets group members easily connect with
each other in a private, secure online environment accessible
over the Internet from any location.

Capital Freenet Community Services |
In partnership with SmartCapital,
the National Capital FreeNet (NCF) serves approximately
9,000 members and operates more than 200 dial-in access
lines as well as a number of public access terminals.

of Ottawa, E-government Portal |
Together with
the City of Ottawa, SmartCapital designed a multi-purpose,
highly advanced portal offering residents and businesses
a wealth of information and a wide range of interactive
e-government services such as online payment of parking
tickets, booking recreational facilities etc.

The National Capital Region
Library Consortium successfully introduced simultaneous
web-based searching of the catalogues of five groups
of libraries in the region including all 33 braches
of the Ottawa Public Library, the libraries of both
local universities, the Library and Archives of Canada,
the Canadian War Museum, Canadian Museum of Civilization
and CISTI (Canada Institute for Scientific & Technical
Info). New hardware and software systems based on international
protocols were acquired and installed to support the
common searches. Catalogue records were converted to
electronic formats as required.

The e-College
sub-project resulted in increased opportunities for
Algonquin College students and teachers to utilize online
learning methodologies. It also brought significant
online services to all members of the college community.

of Ottawa, E-democracy |
SmartCapital developed an
interactive website dedicated to supporting the City
of Ottawa’s Smart Growth Summit, providing residents
with information, feedback mechanisms, discussion forums,
chat, and video-on-demand of significant events. The
site gave more residents access to information, and
more ways to participate in the process.
Ottawa was the first city in Canada to provide both
live streaming video and archived copies of all City
Council Meetings and has since piloted streamed video
presentations of Committee and other meetings.

Student Central
Services
(EduNET) |
EduNET’s
Student Central Services sub-project provided a suite
of specialized online services for the post-secondary
community, including connectivity services and online
information and forums focused on post-secondary student
needs.

| SmartLab |
Several SmartLab sites were
established at OCRI, Ottawa City Hall, Telesat, Algonquin
College and a flagship demonstration facility was established
called SmartCentral. Each site had a physical showcase
facility that was a convergence point for major initiatives
in broadband application development.

| SmartResults |
This sub-project produced
innovative research results concerning the assessment
of SmartCapital initiatives, both short and long term.
Other initiatives include:
- Initiation of research on smart communities and
the barriers to community collaboration with publication
of papers in several journals.
- Creation of a Smart Community Index in cooperation
with partners from the Smart Community International
Network
- Creation of an informal network of researchers
and practitioners with an interest in smart communities.

SmartCapital was also instrumental in:
- developing the City of Ottawa’s Broadband
Plan;
- establishing the inaugural Smart City Summit conference
in 2002, and organizing the 2002 and 2003 conferences.
