Award Criteria
Career Achievement Award
Selection of the award will be based on clear evidence that the individual or team has:
- been involved in the life sciences for a minimum of 10 years beyond post-graduate study
- collaborated with the life sciences industry on a national / international scale
- been a leader in the life sciences industry and has promoted this sector of the economy at the local level and national level
- an excellent research record supported by papers in refereed journals, patents and other relevant publications, or an excellent business track record
Clean Technology Innovation Award (New)
The goal of the Clean Technology Innovation Award is to foster an atmosphere of creativity, innovation and collaboration within Ottawa and Eastern Ontario’s cleantech sector. The award recognizes individuals or teams that are approaching clean technology in an innovative manner especially through strategic collaborations or through independent excellence in research and development. It is open to any individual or team within the bioproduct, clean energy or environmental technology sectors that develops a concept, improvement or invention that significantly benefits or has the potential to significantly benefit the environment.
OCRI Life Sciences, through the Ottawa Cleantech Initiative, will work with the winner to facilitate further development of the innovation.
- Eligible applicants include individuals or teams operating within the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario cleantech sector (including Renfrew, Pembroke, Cornwall, Brockville and other surrounding areas)
- Nominees must clearly define and demonstrate the positive impact or potential benefit of their innovation in the nomination package and may include, for example, improvements in water quality, improvements in energy conversion, increased efficiency in energy consumption, etc.
- Applications demonstrating collaboration through strategic partnership(s) (ie. academic-industry-government) to advance their outcome are strongly encouraged.
Company of the Year Award
Selection of the award will be based on clear evidence that the individual or team has:
- demonstrated entrepreneurial skills in the development of a product or company in the life sciences field
- the ability to motivate staff and outsiders to support the project
- the ability to plan a course of action, to lead down an uncharted course and, if necessary, to change direction
- the ability to balance science and business
- brought tangible benefits to the Ottawa-Carleton economy
Health Innovation Award
The goal of the Health Innovation Award is to foster an atmosphere of creativity and innovation within and between health care teams, or within the health care system. The award is to recognize individuals or teams that are approaching health care in an innovative manner, and is open to any individual within the health care system that comes up with an idea, improvement or invention that significantly impacts, or has the potential to significantly impact health care.
OCRI Life Sciences will work with the individual(s) and or institutions selected for the award to facilitate further development of the innovation.
- This award is available to individuals in the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario region (including Renfrew, Pembroke, Cornwall and Brockville)
- Nominees will be health care individuals (physicians, nurses, or other health care professionals) or teams whose ideas or actions have resulted in a significant improvement in health care or in the health care system
- Impact on patient care or on the health care system must be clearly stated in the nomination package and may include, for example, improvements in patient care (decreased wait time), improved health outcomes, decreased cost to the system, medical devices, etc.
- Nominations may be submitted by hospitals, universities, academic health science centres, or other health care institutions, suppliers to organizations to the healthcare system, or by individuals from such institutions. A letter of support from the head of the department and/or the head of the institution of the nominee is encouraged but not required
Dr. Michael Smith Promising Scientist Award
Selection of the award will be based on clear evidence that the individual or team has:
- made a significant scientific contribution to his or her field
- an excellent research record supported by papers in refereed journals, patents and other relevant publications
- been involved in the life sciences for no more than 10 years beyond post-graduate study
In addition to the recognition, $5,000 will be presented to the winner of the Dr. Michael Smith Promising Scientist Award.
Research Award
(Previously the Basic/Applied Research Award)
Selection of the award will be based on clear evidence that the individual or team has:
- made significant contributions and discoveries in the field of life sciences, (consideration will focus on the level of impact that has been made by the research either within the scientific community or in the discovery’s potential for commercial impact)
- an excellent research record supported by papers in refereed journals, patents and other relevant publications
- received national and/or international recognition for this research from their peers
- performed a significant portion of the research in the National Capital Region
