How Network Neutrality Affects Yo
Are you in the business of networking? Wired, wireless or whatever your business, “network neutrality” is a major issue for your company to think about. How about content? If you’re buying, selling or, especially distributing new media or conventional content, either business to business or to consumers, potential regulatory rules around net neutrality will probably impact your business. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re one of Canada’s biggest ISPs or its newest entrepreneur cracking the mobile commerce market. Net neutrality matters to you.
This session of OCRI’s 45th Circuit will explain all you need to know to navigate your business through the web of net neutrality rules and concepts. There is not yet a single, official definition of the term, but the general idea is that providers of internet, mobile or other forms of network connectivity could be required to treat all content and customers equally. It is kind of like turning telecoms networks into electrical grids, which don’t discern toasters from televisions, let alone who’s using them. If you think a change like this would be important to you and your business, positively or negatively, you’re absolutely right. Come out to the session to learn how, and what you can do about it.

The rapid development of Ottawa’s technology community has
given rise to a growing demand for increased understanding and competence
in a wide range of legal issues of particular importance to technology
firms. This technology legal community embraces in-house counsel,
technology specialists in private practices, public sector counsel,
as well as a spectrum of other company officials with a need or
interest in emerging legal issues.
The 45th Circuit: A Professional Development Session
Now commencing its seventh year of operation, the 45th Circuit
is now another part of the infrastructure of the region, initiated
by the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation and aimed at ensuring
growth and prosperity in the technology sector. The 45th Circuit
is a forum for professionals in the Ottawa technology sector to
learn about and discuss contemporary legal issues affecting the
corporation. It’s also an excellent place for business networking
and for the creation of synergistic relationships.
The 45th Circuit Session:
Sessions are normally held on the first Tuesday of the month. Each
begins with a stand-up lunch/networking at 11:45 a.m., and a presentation
starting at 12:30 p.m. The meeting ends at 1:30 p.m. sharp!
Meeting Topics/Speakers:
A committee of legal specialists select a range of topics that
have appeal to both in-house counsel and the broader technology
legal community. Speakers are legal professionals from both the
private and public sectors who have established a reputation for
depth of knowledge and perspective on the topic for which they present.
Speakers are invited from the Ottawa area as well as from the rest
of North America with assistance of some of our sponsors.
Who Should Attend:
All members of the technology business community are encouraged
to attend, not only executives of companies developing and selling
products, but also of companies providing goods and services in
this sector. Members of the press and communications sector are
very welcome. (The purpose is, after all, to create self-awareness
and strength through networking.) Representatives of pertinent government
agencies and the academic community are also invited. Out-of-town
executives are encouraged to time their visits to Ottawa to enable
them to attend. Companies just getting started are particularly
welcome.
2009-2010 Program Committee Members:
Eric Smith, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (Chair); Christine Maher, March Networks, Jeremy Farr, BLG; Lorraine Mastersmith, Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall LLP, Jeremy deBeer, University of Ottawa; Grant Jameson, Ogilvy Renault; Tom Prowse, Gowlings; and Stephanie Spruston, Cognition LLP.
