Value Derived from Open Source is a Function of Maturity Levels
This session focuses on three areas: open source technology and process are tools to appropriate co-created value; a company's behaviour towards open source follows a value stage model - and co- created value is appropriated in more mature stages; and, to move from one stage to the next, the decision power of the people that make open source investment decisions changes from technology to business strategy decisions makers.

8:32 a.m. - 8:54 a.m.

Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director, Eclipse Foundation, Inc.

The Eclipse Open Innovation Network
Although Eclipse is a well known success in the open source
community, what is less appreciated is that it represents the most
successful model to date for supporting collaborative industrial development of product-ready technologies. Through open governance, transparent development processes and a commercial-friendly licensing model Eclipse supports a new model for companies to share the cost and risk of technology development. By establishing a rich and open innovation network, the many contributors to Eclipse are profitably changing the dynamics of the software industry.

Scott Lake, CEO, Jaded Pixel

What You Should Know About Open Source Businesses

Ingres was released under an open source license in 2004 and was spun out of Computer Associates in 2005. Since then, its business has grown and the company has grown at 40% per year. With 10,000 customers, Ingres has become the start-up that is much more than a start-up. This talk will discuss how Ingres makes money with OSS.

Open Source Software Deployment

Open source software is software distributed under a license permitting users to potentially use, change and/or share the software freely. Given the cost benefits, there is a growing trend for companies and organizations to use OSS in their products and to help them in the development of their products. In this talk, we will examine an OSS stack for software development. Included in the infrastructure is an IDE, a source code repository, a continuous build application, a testing framework, code metrics, a database, and applications for developer and corporate communication, all fully integrated and working together as one.
11:14 a.m. - 11:36 a.m.

Ali Arya, Assistant Professor, School of Information Technology, Carleton University

OpenMEDIA: An Open-Source Environment for Multimedia Education and Research
OpenMEDIA addresses the need for identifying and developing proper open-source tools, and creating a complete open-source environment for education and research in multimedia systems. The project is supported by the School of Information Technology and the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, and includes faculty members, graduate researchers, and undergraduate students. Our approach is based on defining the tasks to be supported by the educational environment, identifying/developing open-source tools for the tasks, setting up workstations with the open-source tools, asking students and researchers to perform their "real" tasks or similar ones on test workstations, and finally comparing and analyzing the results in terms of cost, efficiency, performance, compatibility and integration.

11:36 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Group Discussion / Q&A All / Closing Remarks
